World Water Day – March 22, 2021

World Water Day – March 22, 2021

Do you know, around 2.2 billion people in the world are living without access to safe drinking water? Or that 207 million people spend over 30 minutes per round trip to collect water from an improved source? Water is a precious resource! This requires the need to raise awareness towards it’s judicious use.

“World Water Day” is a day to celebrate the water and raise awareness. It is about taking action to tackle the global water crisis. A core focus of World Water Day is to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030.

The theme for this year is “Valuing Water”.

With growing global population and economic developments, agriculture and industries are getting thirstier and water-intensive energy generation is rising to meet the demand. The problem is aggravated by climate change, which is making water more-erratic and contributing towards water pollution.

As societies balance the demands on water resources, many people’s interests are not being taken into account.

Hence, this year’s campaign is to generate a global, public conversation on social media about how people value water for all its uses. The aim is to create a more comprehensive understanding of how water is valued by different people in different contexts so we can safeguard this precious resource for everyone.

The central narrative of the campaign is designed to encourage people to contribute their stories, thoughts and experiences on the value of water.

You can contribute towards this year’s campaign by sharing your story of what water means to you using the hashtag #Water2Me on social media. Selected comments and opinions would also be available on the World Water Day website: www.worldwaterday.org

On the 7th of November, members of our club helped in organizing and conducting sports activities for children. This involved helping out in the planned games and interacting with the children, who were under the age of 13 and came from and around the area of Mariahoeve in the Hague. Also, parents and some passers-by were present as spectators outside the sports ground, savouring the moment.
