Biodiversity Day – May 22, 2021

Biodiversity Day – May 22, 2021

Biodiversity in simple words means the enormous variety of life on Earth. Biodiversity refers to every living thing, including plants, bacteria, animals, and humans. Scientists have estimated that there are around 8.7 million species of plants and animals in existence. However, only around 1.2 million species have been identified and described so far, most of which are insects. This means that millions of other organisms remain a complete mystery.

The United Nations proclaimed 22 May as the “International Day for Biological Diversity (Biodiversity Day)” to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. Biodiversity Day 2021 is a call to action for biodiversity.

The slogan for this year is: “We’re part of the solution”. The slogan was chosen to be continuation of the momentum generated last year under the over-arching theme, “Our solutions are in nature”, which served as a reminder that biodiversity remains the answer to several sustainable development challenges. From nature-based solutions to climate, health issues, food and water security, and sustainable livelihoods, biodiversity is the foundation upon which we can build back better.

With biodiversity declining at an unprecedented rate and resources being depleted faster than nature can replenish, it is of paramount importance that we all work towards reversing the biodiversity loss. This is the need of the hour in order for human well-being and sustainable development. Everybody has a part to play and we all need to be part of the movement for change.
