Blue Monday during COVID-19

Blue Monday during COVID-19

What is Blue Monday?

Blue Monday falls around the third Monday of January (18th January in 2021) and is often referred to as “the most depressing day of the year”. But why? Mental health experts have a number of theories about that. The most likely scenario is the culmination of factors such as weather changes, holiday debt recovery, a new year of resolutions and just the very suggestion that the day exists.

While the legitimacy of the day is often disputed by experts, the mental health effects of the winter months are very real and can lead towards serious health concerns such as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), anxiety and depression.

Blue Monday during COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic and resulting lockdown may be having a significant effect on people with depression and anxiety, which means we should pay even closer attention to people around us. Either you struggle yourself during this difficult period of time or you want to help a friend or a family member, there’s a number of things you can do to ease the situation.

We have gathered a few valuable sources of information that might help you to tackle this difficult task.

Top tips for your mental health during Coronavirus:

  • Have a routine. Keep up with daily routines as far as possible, or make new ones.
  • Social contact is important. If your movements are restricted, keep in regular contact with people close to you by telephone and online channels.
  • Avoid alcohol and other drugs, binge eating and impulse shopping — any coping mechanisms that are ultimately harmful.

Top tips on caring for someone with depression during the COVID-19:

  • Talk and be open. Remind people that it is always all right to ask for help from friends, family, and professionals.
  • Be ready to take action. Offer to help people get the nutritional food that they need or suggest doing online workouts together.
  • Listen and advise despite the objections you may face.
