Beach Clean-Up Day in Scheveningen: Fighting Plastic Pollution Together

Beach Clean-Up Day in Scheveningen: Fighting Plastic Pollution Together

On October 5th, Rotary Club Köln Kapitol, Rotary Club ’s-Gravenhage Residentie, and Rotaract Den Haag Scheveningen came together to host a successful Beach Clean-Up Day in Scheveningen. This event was part of the End Plastic Soup initiative, dedicated to combating plastic pollution and protecting our oceans.

During the clean-up, volunteers collected significant amounts of plastic waste, including cigarette packs, vapes, plastic packaging, cups, clothing, and even a parasol! Each piece of waste removed was a step toward a cleaner, healthier environment.

Warsha, representing Rotaract Den Haag Scheveningen, led an engaging brainstorming session about the ambitious goals of the End Plastic Soup initiative. Key objectives include eliminating plastic pollution in our oceans by 2050 and significantly reducing the use of single-use plastics worldwide.

The session inspired participants to explore concrete actions—both big and small—that we can all take to make a difference. Every effort counts, and by working together, we can achieve a cleaner planet.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to this impactful project. Your efforts are vital, and together, we can make lasting change.

Global Grant Approval for Clean Water Project in Ghana

Global Grant Approval for Clean Water Project in Ghana

We are thrilled to announce that our global grant application for funding to provide access to clean water and improve sanitation in Ejura and Sekyeredumase, Ghana, has been approved! The project, submitted by the Rotaract Club of Kumasi and the Rotary Club of E-Club of District 7040-Premier, has received a generous award of US$ 57,000.00 from The Rotary Foundation and The Rotary Foundation Canada.

Project Details

Global Grant 24-59654 Ghana Clean Water Project aims to make a significant impact on the lives of students and community members in the Ashanti Region of Ghana near Kumasi. Here’s what the project entails:

  • Construction of Two Boreholes: To provide reliable access to clean water.
  • Installation of 80 Microflush Toilets: These will be built across eight schools to improve sanitation facilities.
  • Safe Water and Hygiene Training: To educate the communities on maintaining hygiene and ensuring the longevity of the clean water sources.

Our goal is to supply clean water to two communities and their schools, directly impacting 4,830 students and community members. This initiative is one of the first Rotaract-led projects to be approved by The Rotary Foundation, marking a significant milestone for our clubs.

Community Involvement

The success of this project relies on the collective efforts of local communities and a broad network of Rotarians and Rotaractors. The schools and their communities will contribute by providing local leadership, labor, materials, supplies, and additional funding.

International Collaboration

This project is a testament to the power of international collaboration, with contributions from Rotarians and Rotaractors across five countries, 14 Rotary Districts, 20 Rotary Clubs, Rotaract Scheveningen and St. Mary’s Academy Interact Club. This widespread support underscores the global commitment to improving access to clean water and sanitation.

Impact

By constructing these facilities and providing essential training, we aim to create a sustainable and healthy environment for the students and communities in Ejura and Sekyeredumase. Access to clean water and proper sanitation will not only improve health outcomes but also enhance the quality of education and overall well-being.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has supported this project. Your dedication and generosity are making a real difference in the lives of thousands.

Stay tuned for updates as we embark on this transformative journey!

🌟 Dive into the World of Thomas: Where Purpose and Passion Collide! 🌟

Here’s what he has to say –

“Hey, social media fam! 👋 I’m Thomas, a 28-year-old Dutchman residing in The Hague, where every corner feels like home sweet home. But let me rewind a bit: my journey has been sprinkled with adventures abroad, from Rwanda to Zambia, shaping my love for exploring new horizons. Now, I’m back in the Netherlands, embracing the vibrant life of this dynamic city.

By day, you’ll find me navigating the world of the Dutch Gambling Authority, where I manage the addiction prevention fund. It’s not just about overseeing casinos and lotteries; it’s about providing a safety net for those battling gambling addiction, ensuring they have the support they need to thrive.

When I’m not immersed in work, I like travelling, visiting museums, watching football matches, and grabbing a beer with my friends. This year, Ireland awaits, with dreams of exploring the enchanting landscapes. And let’s not forget the allure of the west coast of the United States and the vibrant culture of Morocco, waiting to be discovered.

I’m also a proud member of Rotaract Scheveningen, where community comes alive. From lending a hand at city farms to spreading joy with the Salvation Army, every project is a chance to make a difference, fueled by laughter and camaraderie with fellow members.

What keeps me coming back to Rotaract? It’s the shared spirit of service and connection. Having been part of a service club in Eindhoven, I sought that same sense of belonging here, finding it in the diverse, international community of Rotaract Scheveningen.

My favorite Rotary era of focus? It’s got to be economic and community development. Why? Because it’s about creating pathways to success for everyone, empowering individuals to shape their destinies and build stronger communities.

To all the potential volunteers out there: Take the leap! Whether it’s a few hours or a regular commitment, the energy you give back to society will fill your heart in ways you never imagined. And if you choose to volunteer with Rotaract Scheveningen, you’ll not only find purpose but a group of ‘gezellige’ people as a bonus. 😉”
